INTENDED TOPIC

Why P2P file sharing, global warming prevention, piracy activities are so futile. Prevention of this type of activity is almost impossible because of the nature of the Internet. Since the internet is global there is no way that you can rein in other countries in your way of thinking, because everyone has their own agenda.
Recently, there has been talks about global Warming and the prevention or reduction of green house gases. I make this comparison to trying to prevent digital piracy because from a global warming aspect, the biggest producers of carbon emission are India and China. Therefore whether if we in the U.S. make changes, we cannot force these countries to do the same.
This analogy can be brought forward with digital piracy, where it would be nearly impossible to even try to make suggestion to those highly carbon producing countries.
Previously, drug companies like Phizer have tried to prevent companies in India and China from copyrighting their AIDS drugs and have been unsuccessful.

P2P File Sharing

File Sharing is the exchange of digital Media such as Files, Movies, Music, etc
Today there are numerous companies that share and exchange data for common use.

However, there is another aspect of file sharing which is the illegal use of file sharing without permission of the writer or producer which is called digital piracy or called P2P File Sharing. P2P file sharing programs – is software that allows you to swap music, video and other files over the Internet. There are many free P2P file sharing programs existing on the Internet which individuals join and contribute to.

Some examples of P2P are BitTorrent as indicated by one of the reading and BearShare. With these programs you are allowed to share, downloading or viewing copies of Movies or listening to Music without the proper authorization from the Producer of these movies.

One of the earliest companies guilty of this activity is Napster as mentioned in article “Should Online Scofflaws Be Denied Web Access” but the last five years have seen a proliferation of illegal file sharing activity around the world.

Privacy & Confidentiality

While privacy and confidentiality are proudly mentioned and displayed by all media systems such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIN, the fact is it is truly non-existent. These same companies will not in an instant stop to share your information with other third party companies for a profit, or to market your information for a number of different reasons.

In addition no information out on the Internet is 100 % private, since as long as it is on the Web, hackers can get to your personal information and create havoc with your identity. However, companies can make an effort to not make it so easy to break into their sites. Instead these companies go very easy on the issue of privacy.

  • Use Facebook more to communicate.
    • The university should create a number of discussion blog where students can post their comments, suggestions and criticisms.

    • Events carried by the university can be pushed more often to students. These activities can range from sporting events, to new hiring of staff, recent improvements in school curriculum, etc.
    • Allow students to create their own podcasting events and award prizes

Creativity

Here we go again. The power of New Media has allowed a lot of creativity even among musicians. As discussed in the article ‘Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds’ we see how a musician can create a production with all the tools available at an instant.

Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds

Virtual worlds can both be used in both a positive and negative environments. For example, one of the negative aspects are these games where someone creates an image called an AVATAR and acts out the fantasies of the game. In reading “I’ve been in that club, Just not in real life” depicts how teens can grow up lacking social interaction with their peers because they do do meet face to face.
The positive aspects are the way institutions use the technology for example the reading ‘Naughty Auties’ battle autism with virtual interaction ‘Second Life’ used a lot of real world situations. The use of triage instances to model emergencies and create the different interactions are very useful.

Social Networking Sites

Facebook uthe most popular social networking sitesers must register before using the site, after which they may create a profile and add other users as friends and exchange messages, including automatic notifications when they update their profile. In addition, users may join groups, organized by workplace, school or college, or other characteristics. All these features enable Facebook to spread it’s influence over a wide and diverse group.
Myspace is aimed at a younger Generational audience was the most visited social networking site in the world, until facebook took over in popularity. This is because they lacked the features that Facebook has provided to its customers which is a lot of personalization.
Twitter is an online social networking site and provides microblogging services that enables its users to send and read text-based messages of up to 140 characters, known as tweets.Twitter has become very popular with teens and seeing that companies are putting it to use as indicated in this week’s reading, I think the potential for continued growth is huge.
LinkedIn is a site for professional occupations. Founded in December 2002, I think it is best suited for professional networking. LinkedIn reports more than 175 million registered users in more than 200 countries and territories

How does a Twitter discussion compare to a BlackBoard Discussion? To an in-class discussion?

The first comparison to a Twitter discussion compared to a blackboard is that you are limited with the amount of words in a Twitter discussion. You are therefore restrained as to how extensive your examples that you are making can be. With an in-class discussion, there is no comparison to being able to express yourself fully.
